Illegal migration across Ukraine-Poland border increased
The number of attempts to illegally cross the border increased at the Ukraine-Poland border last year.
It was indicated by the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine based on the results of the meeting of its chief Petro Tsyhykal with the Polish Border Guard’s commander-in-chief Tomasz Praga.
The chiefs of two agencies consider illegal migration as one of the main threats at the border. The 18% increase in the number of attempts to cross the border illegally was documented in 2017.
It should be noted that the illegal transportation of cigarettes fell – from 1,035,000 packets in 2016 to 691,000 packets in 2017.
Moreover, it was noted during the meeting that the Ukraine-Poland border remains a main route for amber transportation from Ukraine. 412 kg of amber were seized in 2017, which is 1.5 times more than in 2016 (287 kg).
The chiefs of the border guard agencies emphasized the proper level of cooperation of the responsible authorities on the issues of prevention of illegal border crossing and other kinds of illegal activities, as well as the importance of continuation of close cooperation in this field.
