Korean diaspora in Ukraine increased almost three times during 10 years
Korean diaspora in Ukraine increased almost three times during 10 years. About 35 thousand ethnic Koreans live currently in Ukraine.
This was informed on Tuesday during the meeting “Ukrainian and Korean in “glocal” context: prospects of strategic partnership” in Kyiv by the director of Korean Cultural Centre in Ukraine Kan Den Sik.
“About 35 thousand of ethnic Koreans live currently in Ukraine; they mainly migrated after the Soviet Union’s collapse. And during the recent ten years and more the flow of refugees exactly from Asian republics dramatically increased. If, according to data of 2000, there were 13 thousand Koreans in Ukraine, then their number increased almost three times since that time”, he said.
These data were also confirmed by the chairman of the Verkhovna Rada’s Committee for Human Rights, National Minorities and International Relations Oleg Zarubynskyi.
“Yes, according to our estimations, from 30 to 35 thousand ethnic Koreans live in Ukraine”, the people’s deputy said.
According to the words of Kan Den Sik, the increase of Korean diaspora in Ukraine, first of all, is caused by the fact that Koreans began to migrate to Ukraine from Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, in search of better living conditions.
