March 8 is the UN Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace

On March 8, 1908, by the appeal of the New York social democratic women’s organization, the meeting with slogans about equal rights of women took place. On February 23 (March 8), 1917, during the beginning of the events, immediately preceding the February Revolution in Russia, the textile workers of Vyborg region of Petrograd were ones of the first women, who went on strike. The demonstration with demands of equal rights for women and bread, arranged by socialists, took place the same day. In 1975, the UN, in connection with the International Women’s Year, declared March 8 as the International Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace.
