Spain Accepted Biggest Number of Migrants from Africa in 2018

Spain became the main gateway in Europe for African migrants who crossed the Mediterranean Sea last year, Euractiv reports with reference to the data released by the UN Refugee Agency. 

55,756 migrants and refugees, who arrived by sea from North Africa, were registered in Spain in 2018. 

Italy, under the leadership of the anti-immigration government, has reduced the number of arrivals significantly last year down to 23,371 persons, which is approximately a fifth of the number of arrivals in 2017 when 119,369 crossed the border from Libya. 

The total of 113,145 migrants and refugees arrived in Europe by sea.
